Obituary Condolences

March 30, 1931 - May 23, 2013 EDMOND Ret. M/Sgt Richard J. Reed, 82, went to work for God on May 23, 2013. Born on March 30, 1931, to Dr. James R. Reed and Susannah Thompson Patterson Reed in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, he graduated high school at Shattuck Military Academy, Faribault, MN; BA from UCO, Edmond, OK. He was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans and Black Horse Regiment, 11th Armored Calvary; co-founded Edmond Soccer Club; and served on the Board at Church of Good Shepherd; assistant Scout Master; soccer coach; and football assistant coach. He played football and hockey during high school and jogged daily for over 35 years. He enjoyed hiking and camping. His interests also included sports, cars and music. He played Bugle and French Horn and conducted his high school band during his senior year. His main hobby was photography, and he was never seen without his camera. During his military career of 24 years, duty and honor guided his life, with service in Korea and Vietnam, plus two tours in Germany. He received a Bronze Star for actions in Vietnam. Richard had a distinguished second career as a photographer. He served as State Capitol Photographer, taking and producing official photographs for the state of Oklahoma. He was honored on the floor of the House of Representatives and Senate for his devoted service. Richard was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Betty Jane Spencer and Patricia Ann Hopkins. He is survived by his loving wife, constant companion and partner of 63 years, Moyna Kay Reed; brother, Donald Karl Reed, of Spokane, WA; and four children, Elizabeth (Reed) Garner and husband Thomas, of Neosho, MO; Susan (Reed) Michels and husband David, of Helena, MT; Richard Robert Reed and wife Maureen, of Easton, PA; and Douglas Scott Reed and wife Deborah, of Pittsburgh, PA; grandchildren, Sheila, James, Shane, Michael, Justin, Sabrina, Kurt, Fiona, Allison and Colleen; eight great-grandchildren; cousins, Sue Seymour, of Cache, OK; and Bob Reed, of Houston, TX; six nieces and three nephews. Survived also by his extended family: sisters-in-law, Pam Goree, Linda Bradley, their complete families, and the families of deceased sister-in-law, Jackie Burke, with heartfelt thanks for their love and support. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 3, 2013, at the Church of Good Shepherd, 1100 N. Broadway, Edmond, Oklahoma; Reception prior to services at 10 a.m. in the parish hall; Military Burial at Fort Sill National Cemetery, Elgin, Oklahoma, at 2 p.m., procession leaving the church at 12 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations for Alzheimer's Research or to the Veterans of the 11th Armored Calvary of Vietnam and Cambodia for Scholarships.
