SteglichOctober 8, 1921 - March 12, 2014 EL PASO, TX Ruth Naomi Edwards Steglich passed away suddenly at the age of 92 on Wednesday, March 12, 2014, enjoying good health and independence until her passing. Ruth was born in Logansport, Indiana, on October 8, 1921, to Bertha Marie Kohls Edwards and Tyler Campbell Edwards. After graduating from high school, Ruth worked in retail and at the phone company, enjoying both jobs. However, she found her life's passion in a health career when she joined the U.S. Navy in World War II and, as a proud member of the WAVES, worked as an X-ray technician. She worked over two days without rest as part of the Navy's response to the Texas City Disaster on April 16 and 17, 1947. While helping a victim onto the X-ray table, she injured her back, and suffered minor back problems for the rest of her life. She was proud of her service and that she was able to be part of the disaster response. After leaving the Navy in June 1947, Ruth worked in the first X-ray clinic at the University of Texas at Austin. In the fall of 1947, she met Winfred George Steglich at church, and on May 30, 1948, they married. She and Win moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he had his first academic job. In the following decades, they lived in Fort Collins, Colorado; Lubbock, Texas; El Paso, Texas; and Norman, Oklahoma, as Win pursued his academic career. In the 1970s, while in El Paso, Ruth returned to school and earned her Licensed Practical Nurse certification. She subsequently worked at Providence Memorial Hospital in El Paso, at Norman Regional Hospital and the University of Oklahoma's Goddard Health Center in Norman, and for a private medical practice in Norman. After Ruth and Win retired, they enjoyed traveling. Together they took several trips to Europe and toured Greece and Israel, among other places. Ruth enjoyed keeping up with her children and grandchildren. She always said that she wanted to live long enough to hold her great-grandchildren, and in 2009, Emmaline and Owen Houk were born, making Ruth an official great-grandma. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Winfred Steglich; father, Tyler Edwards; mother, Marie Edwards; and brother, Richard Edwards. She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Steglich of Harrisville, Pennsylvania; daughter, Catherine Steglich Blaha of Norman, Oklahoma; son, Jim Steglich of El Paso, Texas; granddaughter, Sarah Blaha Houk and husband Vince of Dallas, Texas; granddaughter, Lisa Blaha of Norman, Oklahoma; grandson, Matthew Blaha of Chicago, Illinois; and great-grandchildren Emmaline and Owen Houk. Ruth moved back to El Paso with her son, Jim, in 2012, and lived at the Monte Vista at Coronado, a superior senior living center. The family appreciates the comfortable, active, and independent lifestyle that Ruth enjoyed at Monte Vista during her last years. Services for cremation are under the direction of Martin Funeral Home West in El Paso, Texas. The family will have a private memorial service at a later time.
