February 19, 1918 - December 14, 2013 EDMOND Dr. Shelley Howe Rutherford, 95, of Edmond, Oklahoma, went to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, December 14, 2013, in Shawnee.Services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 18, 2013, at Rock Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Richard Zimmer. Burial will follow in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Ponca City, Oklahoma. Walker Funeral Service of Shawnee is in charge of arrangements. She was born February 19, 1918 in Houston, TX to Julius Holland Howe, M.D. & Rose Taylor (Knasel) Howe. She attended Ponca City High School, graduating in 1936. She received her BA in English Literature from OU in 1940, her MA in English Literature from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois in 1942, and her EDD in English Literature from Oklahoma State University in 1969. In 1950 she married Bayless Earl Rutherford. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Edmond, OK, Daughters of the American Revolution, Alpha Chi Omega Alumni Association, Delta Kappa Gamma Professional Teacher's Sorority, Kappa Kappa Iota Professional Teacher's Sorority, National Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century, Daughters of 1812, Society of Mayflower Descendants, National Council of Teachers of English, Southwestern Branch Modern Language Association, Edmond Historical Society, Volunteers for Animal Welfare (OKC), NEA, OEA, and AAUW. She was listed among the Who's Who of Oklahoma, Who's Who of The South & Southwest, Who's Who of American Women/1977-1978, Who's Who of Women Educators, International Who's Who in Community Services and International Who's Who of Intellectuals, Community Leaders and Noteworthy Americans/1978, Dictionary of International Biography/1978 & 1979, Personalities of the South/1979, and The World Who's Who of Women in Education/First Edition, 1978. She presented numerous papers to clubs and organizations, as well as scholarly papers at academic conferences. Dr. Rutherford was professor of English Literature, an instructor of English at ASTP University of Illinois at Champaign, 1943, a member of faculty in English at Sterling (Colorado) Junior College from 1944-1946, instructor of English at Oklahoma State University from 1955-1970, and a professor of English at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond from 1970-1988.She was preceded in death by her parents, J. Holland Howe, M.D. and Rose Knasel Howe. She is survived by her daughter: Shelley Howe Zuhdi and her husband Omar; grandson: Christopher Howe Nazih Zuhdi; her dog: Bobbie; and numerous friends. Every person she met was a friend; no one was a stranger to her. She opened her home and her heart to everyone and everything. She treated everyone with love and respect. Even in her last illness, she said "please" and "thank you" to her caregivers. Her life was nothing less than in illustration of Galatians 5:6 "Faith that worketh in love". Jesus Christ was a living reality to her from her earliest years and she endeavored to allow Him Lordship in every aspect of her life. Generations of students, colleagues, and friends can attest to a life surrendered to Christ. She was a blessing and a friend to her family. Christ has now received her unto Himself.
