AJ MELKER

Oct 5, 1922 - Oct 27, 2012 OKLAHOMA CITY A.J. Melker, 90, was welcomed into the loving arms of his Lord and Savior on Oct. 27, 2012. He was born on Oct. 5, 1922, to Jacob Spivey & Ethel Mae (King) Melker in Quanah, TX. A.J. moved to Oklahoma at age 5 and lived most of his life in the Fairview, OK area, where he worked on the farm. In 1942, he went to Long beach, CA and parked cars at the Hilton Hotel (the same parking lot that Howard Hughes parked his own car and motorcycle). He then returned to Oklahoma and was inducted into the U.S. Army, serving his country from Dec. 1942 to July 1945. He served at Ft. Sill and Ft. McClain, MS, left New York on 6/10/43 and arrived in North Africa on 6/21/43, made the invasion of Sicily 7/10/43, went to Italy, France, 10/16/44, Germany and came home on 7/17/45. He then returned to the Fairview area and worked two years for the city of Fairview at a Dairy. After that, he moved to Oklahoma City, where he began to work for Oklahoma Publishing. Eventually, he accepted a job at Mobile Oil. He retired from Mobile Oil after 37-1/2 years of work as a geological technician. After retirement, he continued to work, driving for local dealerships until he was 85 years of age. A.J. met the love of his life, Lula, in 1947. On their first date, A.J. picked up Lula on his Harley Davidson motorcycle, and they went and got a root beer. After courting for two years, A.J. married Lula in her sister's home in OKC on June 5, 1949. A.J. and Lula shared 56 years of wonderful marriage together until her death, Feb. 20, 2006. Together they raised their daughter, Linda, and watched their grandchildren grow. A.J. joined Capitol Hill Nazarene Church in 1948, and in 1988, he joined Trinity Nazarene Church, where he was currently a member. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Lula. His memory will be lovingly cherished by his daughter, Dr. Linda Garrett & husband Glenn, of OKC; two granddaughters: Krista George & husband Anthony, of Garland, TX; and Kimberly Coryell, of Bethany; three step-grandchildren: James Garrett, of Ft. Smith, AR; Jennifer Verlin and family, of Jacksonville, NC; and Nolan Garrett and family, of Bellevue, NE; five step-great-grandchildren; his brother, Cecil Melker & wife Lorene, of Centennial, CO; and a host of loving extended family and friends. Viewing will be today 4-8 p.m., and the family will receive friends 5-6 p.m., at Vondel Smith South. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in A.J.'s name to Nazarene Missions International, c/o Trinity Church, 7301 S Walker Ave, OKC, OK 73139. Services to celebrate his life will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, at Trinity Church of the Nazarene, with interment to follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
