"Gene" MurrayJuly 5, 1927 - Jan 17, 2013 PURCELL Robert Eugene "Gene" Murray, age 85, of Purcell, OK, died Thursday, January 17, 2013. He was born July 5, 1927, in Joplin, MO to Charles Glen and Ida Morean (Stacks) Murray. He was raised in De Soto, MO, where his family moved in 1932. Gene joined the United States Army and served his country proudly during World War II with rank of Sgt. T/4. He married Dixie Hurst in 1947 and to this union, son, Charlie, and daughter, Lisa, were born. Gene attended the University of Missouri School of Journalism, graduating in 1953. Gene began his career in the newspaper business at the Kansas City Star as a reporter and worked his way up to Sunday Editor. He then worked at The Daily Oklahoman, retiring in 1989 as Sunday Editor. He married Susan (Rose) Moerlins Wilson July 5, 1985. They made their home in OKC before settling in Purcell in 2001. Gene's sense of humor and bright blue eyes will not be forgotten. He was a faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Purcell. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him! He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Thomas Ross Murray. He is survived by wife, Susan; children: Lisa Tapp, of Liberty, MO; Charlie Murray and wife Kendra, of Lenexa, KS; Greg Moerlins and Karen Weltmer, of Shamrock, TX; and Sharon Moerlins, of OKC; grandchildren, Addison Murray, Hannah Tapp, Haley Tapp, Brandon Moerlins and wife Amy, and Amanda Leehan and husband Christopher; great-grandchildren, Melody Moerlins and Sterling Moerlins; brother, David McCumber, of Carthage, MO; sisters: Janet Goodwin, of Crystal City, MO; and Glenda "Babe" Tinsley, of Malakoff, TX; sister-in-law, Barbara Murray, of St. Peters, MO; two nephews, Todd Murray and Jason Murray; and a host of other family and friends. A celebration of Gene's life is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, January 25, 2013, at Trinity UMC, Purcell.
