Lester Dunn

Oct. 25, 1912 - Sept. 24, 2011 BETHANY Dr. Lester Lay Dunn went to be with his Lord peacefully September 24, 2011 just one day and a month short of his 99th Birthday. Lester was born October 25, 1912 in Newburg, OK to Walter and Hattie DeShields Dunn. Growing up he was skilled in hunting, trapping, horsemanship and of course, singing and playing the guitar. In 1932, he brought his musical talents to Bethany-Peniel College (Southern Nazarene University) receiving his B.F.A. in 1936. Following his senior recital, he married his accompanist and sweetheart, Cyrena Margaret Middleton of Woodbine, KS. After serving as principal in Kingston, OK from 1936 to 1939, he became principal of Bethany High School. In 1941, he received his Master's in Music from the University of Oklahoma. He remained principal of BHS until 1942 when he became a part of the World War II effort. He entered the war as Private Lester Dunn, quickly became Lieutenant Dunn and left as Captain Dunn in 1946 with a Bronze Star due to his heroic efforts in the Battle of the Bulge. He returned to BPC (SNU) where he became head of the music department and retired in 1978. He was conferred the honorary degree Doctor of Letters by Bethany Nazarene College in 1973. His musical excellence moved many a soul with his spirit filled performances both personal and those of his beloved A Cappella Choirs. Lester was preceded in death by Margaret, his sweetheart of 70 years. He is survived by his sister Geneva Pierce of Holdenville, OK; son James, daughter-in-law Tammie, and son John of Oklahoma City; grandchildren Lezli Shire and husband Todd of Oklahoma City, Shannon Woodruff and husband Neal of Kankakee, IL, Chad Dunn and wife Sabra of Flower Mound, TX, Lorrie Cottam and husband Geron of Yukon, OK, Shawn Dunn and wife Rebecca of Oklahoma City, Kamber Hurst and husband Adam of Norman, OK; great grandchildren Ryan and Kayelyn Woodruff, Bailey, Dylan and Savannah Shire, Libby Cottam and Liam Hurst. He loved them all. The family will receive visitors on Thursday, 6-8 PM, at Mercer-Adams. Services will be 10:00 AM, Friday, September 30, 2011, at Bethany First Nazarene Church with interment in Chapel Hill Cemetery.
