Obituary Condolences

January 1, 1930 - September 29, 2012 OKLAHOMA CITY Irwin C. McLendon, M.D. ("Dr. Mac", "Win")Went to be with the Lord 9/29/2012. Born 1/1/1930 in Hazlehurst, Georgia to Otto and Ola McLendon. He graduated from high school at age 16. Attended South Georgia Junior College in Douglas, GA, Emory University in Atlanta, GA, and the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA, graduating in 1950. He entered the U.S. Air Force and served his internship at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX, then Aviation Medical Examiner School at Randolph AFB. He was transferred to Langley AFB at Hampton Roads, VA, where he was Chief of Aviation Medicine. He was discharged from the Air Force in July 1958 and began his medical practice in OKC in the Britton area. In 1977, he built a clinic in Yukon and moved his practice there until he retired in 1996. He was a charter member of Village Baptist Church (VBC) and was ordained a Deacon in that church. He was very active in VBC including serving as Chairman of the Deacons, heading Sunday School departments, serving on Pulpit committees and other search committees and head of the building committee for the sanctuary. He was Father of the Year at VBC in 1973. He was a member of many medical organizations including AOA and AMA. During his years of practice he was on the staffs of St. Anthony Hospital, Baptist Hospital, Bethany Hospital, Deaconess Hospital & Mercy Hospital. He was Chief of Staff at Deaconess Hospital 1968-1969 and again 1978-1979. He was Chief of Staff at Bethany Hospital 1993-1994. He continued to make house calls and nursing home visits until he retired. He was a pilot and had 1500 hours of flight time. After his retirement, he and his wife spent their time traveling between Waikoloa, HI, Sanibel Island, FL, and OKC, OK. He loved life and never met a stranger. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sonya; children, Kathy Grady and husband Walter of Ardmore, OK, Melanie Frost and husband Bob of Pauls Valley, OK, Janne Lawson and fiance Ralph Penn of Norman, OK, Kim and wife Kelley of Edmond, OK, Keren McLendon of OKC; grandchildren, Mary Katharine Grady of OKC, Michael Grady of Norman, OK, Tricia Wilmot and husband Toby of Maysville, OK, Rocky Frost and wife Amberlee of Norman, OK, T.J. Lawson and wife Katie of Norman, OK, Tyke Lawson and wife Allie of Jenks, OK, Joe Lawson of Norman, OK, Joshua McLendon and wife Sonya of OKC, and Alexandra McLendon of OKC; great-grandchildren, Gabe, Ty, and Gentry Wilmot of Maysville, OK, and Kolt, Kash, and Kreed Frost of Norman, OK; step-grandchilden, Brianne Knapp, Paige Ferris and husband, Jake, and their children Cache & Charlie, all of Elmore City; one brother, Joe Lewis McLendon, MD and wife Inez of Macon, GA; one nephew and two nieces in GA and many cousins. He was a good Christian and moral man who loved his God, his family, his church, and his medical practice. He will be sorely missed. A note of appreciation to Hospice, especially Becky, Audra, Tamie, & Sabrina. Everyone helped us through a very difficult time. Also a thank you to Betty Dawson of First Call. Services will be held Friday, October 5, at 2:00 p.m., at Village Baptist Church (10600 N. May Ave., OKC, OK 73120).
