MARY BATES Obituary
Dec. 7, 1930 - Sept. 11, 2017 BETHANY Mary Lou Bates, 86, died Sept. 11, 2017. She was born Dec. 7, 1930, in Lone Tree, IA to William and Nila (Galloway) Kelso. She graduated Summa Cum Laude at age 20 from Bethany-Peniel College (SNU), receiving her bachelor of music education degree. She was a private piano teacher who taught English and music at the high school level. She was also a gifted songwriter. Mary Lou taught Sunday school, Caravans, Bible school, and was a church pianist, certified scuba diver, snow skier, water skier, tennis player, and seamstress. She continued her quest for learning later in life by taking classes on natural healing and herbal nutrition. She obtained her Certificate in Reflexology in 1988. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Preceded in death by her parents and three younger siblings; survivors include her devoted husband of 66 years, Milton D. Bates, Jr.; two daughters, Gwen Bates, of OKC; and Jane Ann Smith & husband Randy, of Highlands Ranch, CO; and grandson, Courtland Wilson, of Highlands Ranch, CO. Viewing is Wednesday, noon - 9 p.m. with family present 5-7 p.m. at Mercer-Adams. Graveside Service will be Thursday, Sept. 14, 9 a.m. in Bethany Cemetery.
