1916 - 2017 Obituary Condolences
"Libby" Waters Nov. 18, 1916 - March 9, 2017 OKLAHOMA CITY Mary Elizabeth "Libby" Waters passed away on March 9, 2017, at Quail Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Oklahoma City at the age of 100. She lived on her own until she was 99 years old with the help of her daughter and son-in-law. Libby was born on November 18, 1916, to Edna E. and John Olin Bales in Kansas City, MO. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, who died two years before she was born; and her husband, Thomas Floyd Waters. She is survived by her only daughter and son-in-law, Barbara & Mason "Smokey" Jett, of OKC; two granddaughters, Sharon Jett, of Frisco, TX; and Betsy Jett Gaske, of Edmond, OK; and two great-grandsons, Coulter and Landon Gaske, of Edmond. She spent her early life in Oblong and Casey, IL and Martinsville, IN. She graduated from Mattoon, IL High School in 1934 and then, attended Eastern Illinois State Teachers College. She married Thomas Floyd Waters on March 6, 1937, in Champaign, IL. During WWII, she worked with her mother in the Jane Lee dress shop in Decatur, IL. After the war, she and her husband moved to Salem, IL, where they lived for 33 years. She attended the Salem Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday School in the Primary Department. While in Salem, she was active in the Marion County Chapter of the American Cancer Society and was publicity chairman for many years. She was President of the Oak Park PTA and was an active member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader for Troop #6 for seven years and always helped with the SCHS Band fund-raisers. In 1979, she and her husband moved to Oklahoma City to enjoy time with their children and grandchildren. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in OKC. Services will be held at Hahn-Cook/ Street and Draper Chapel on March 20, 2017, at 2 p.m. Visitation will be on Sunday, March 19 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Hahn-Cook/ Street and Draper and the family will be there 6-8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Salem Presbyterian Church in Salem, IL; Westminster Presbyterian Church in OKC; or to Heritage Hall School in OKC.
