TAUNO EKONEN Obituary
Ekonen Aug. 27, 1919 - Jan. 15, 2018 OKLAHOMA CITY Tauno O. ("Don") Ekonen, was born August 27, 1919 to Otto and Wilma Sofia (Lukkarinen) Ekonen in Paynesville, Michigan. In 1938 he began an apprenticeship in a painting and decorating business and was promoted to supervisor. In 1941, he was drafted into the US Army, 32nd Infantry Division and later transferred to the Army Air Corps where he served in the Parachute Shop as a Parachute Rigger. In 1942, he was promoted to First Sergeant. He served overseas in World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946. Don married Dorothy Margaret Guhlstorf on January 5, 1946. They had two daughters, Emily E. Schultheiss and Barbara Ann Bonham. Don worked for the U.S. Post Office serving as a letter carrier, Supervisor, Assistant Postmaster in Norman, Oklahoma and as the first Registrar of the Oklahoma Postal Training Operations. He retired from the Postal Service in 1974 and pursued his lifelong love of making and repairing violins. He won many awards from the Violin Maker's Association of Arizona and The Violin Society of America. Don was a lifelong Lutheran and served in many positions in his churches including congregation president, Sunday School Superintendent and teacher. He also sang in the church choir for many years. Don was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy and his daughter Emily. He is survived by his daughter Barbara, two grandchildren, Michelle Siebert (Mathew) and Bradley Rice (Becky) and five great grandchildren, Anya, Zoe and Cord Siebert, Noah and Jax Rice. A visitation will be held Friday, January 19th, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 8701 NW Expressway, OKC. Services will be Saturday, January 20, at 2:00 PM at Zion Lutheran Church, 7701 W. Britton Road, OKC. Burial will be at the Norman IOOF Cemetery in Norman, Oklahoma.
