March 27, 1927 - Dec 13, 2012 CORDELL Walter Ray Sewell, of Cordell, OK, was born to Augie and Dera Ray (Hutcherson) Sewell on March 27, 1927. He was the fourth child, joining sister, Christine, and brothers, Bill and Gene. The family was completed when sister, Betty, and brother, David, were born. Walter attended schools in Rocky and Cloud Chief. During Walter's senior year, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country proudly as a medic. After discharge from the Navy, he returned to Cordell, where he met and married Vesta Jean Rhodes. A son, Michael Ray, was born to this union. Walter was called to return to service during the Korean Conflict. When he returned home, he and Jean lived in Oklahoma City, where daughter, Karen Kay, was born. After a few years, the family returned to Cordell to live. Walter had a love for farming but decided to form a construction company with his brother, David, later named Sewell Brothers Construction. In 1975, Walter sold his half of the company to David so that he could finally pursue his love of farming and cattle operations full time. Walter met Carol Jones Belter at a Super Bowl game in 1974 at Carol's home in Clinton. He was not quite ready to give up his life of bachelorhood until 1976, and with all his "Ducks" in a row, he proposed to Carol. This was just the beginning of a great love story. Walter and Carol had total respect and love for each other that will endure throughout eternity. They were baptized together and were members of the First Baptist Church in Clinton. Walter passed from this life into Eternal Life with his Lord and Savior on December 13, 2012, with Carol by his side. Walter was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Bill, Gene, and David; sister, Christine; son-in-law, Tom Coburn; and granddaughter, Natasha Madison. Walter was well-loved and respected by all who knew him. He was affectionately known as "Duck" to his friends, but the title he cherished the most was Paw Paw by his nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He never missed an opportunity to tell them how much he loved them and how proud he was of his family. Walter and Carol shared a special bond with Carol's sister, Betty, and her late husband, Vernon Stowers. Walter is survived by his wife, Carol; Mike and Kay Sewell, of Clinton; Karen Coburn, of Cordell; stepdaughters: Brenda and Dirk Denton, of Geary; Carla and David Howe, of Clinton; and Darcy Belter Fuller, of Clinton; and sister, Betty Rhodes Pitt and husband Leroy, of Weatherford. He leaves behind a legacy of extended family, special nieces and nephews and close friendships. His quiet strength and sweet spirit will be missed by all who knew him. A private family service is pending. Services are under the direction of Musick-Varner Funeral Home, Cordell, OK. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the United Methodist Health Care Center in Clinton. Any act of kindness to your fellow man is a tribute to Walter's memory.
