Obituary Condolences

April 9, 1943 - Jan 9, 2013 SAN ANTONIO Beloved mother, sister, aunt, cousin, educator and friend, Carol Suzanne "Suzy" Moss Payne, died on Wednesday morning, January 9, 2013, at her home in San Antonio, Texas, following a long, courageous battle with colon cancer. She was 69 years old. Suzy was born in Oklahoma City on April 9, 1943, to Carrie Lou and Lantz Moss. She grew up in Oklahoma City and developed an early love for science and music. She graduated from Putnam City High School in 1961 and was awarded a physics scholarship from the University of Oklahoma. Instead, Suzy decided on music and graduated from OU with her Bachelor of Music Education in 1965. She taught music in Fullerton, California, until 1968. Suzy returned to OU to begin her Master's Degree in finance. She soon met and married fellow graduate student, Roy Payne, who had just been accepted into the U.S. Foreign Service as a linguist. They were stationed first in Tokyo, where their son, Patrick Andrew, was born, and then Surabaya, Indonesia, where their daughter, Carol Lynn, was born. The family returned to Oklahoma in 1975. Suzy raised her children in Yukon and taught music in the Oklahoma City area schools, and changed to work in technical support for a satellite tracking service company. In 1999, she moved to Texas, where both of her children and families lived. She settled in San Antonio. She taught computer science at Business Careers High School, a position she loved. Suzy was preceded in death by grandparents: Bertha Clifton White Gardner, of Willow, Oklahoma; Kansas and R.C. Moss, of Oklahoma City. In Dallas, she leaves her daughter, Carol, and son-in-law, Trent Horton, and grandchildren, Trevor, Ella and Lily Horton. In San Antonio, she leaves her son, Patrick, and daughter-in-law, Thuy, and grandchildren, Penny, Ashley, Kerri Lou and Abigail Payne. She leaves her sisters: Alice Dahlgren and husband Don, of Oklahoma City; and Toni Moss, of Tulsa. She leaves a nephew, Eric Dahlgren, and wife, Jamie, of Oklahoma City, and children, Reagan, Emma and Rex; a niece, Emily Haemer, and husband, Dr. Matt Haemer, of Denver, and children, Anna, Luke and Clara. She leaves cousins, Alice SerVoss, Diane Coleman, Marilyn Noll, and Beverly Gray. Suzy leaves many good and close friends and former students who will greatly miss her encouragement, intellect, and smile. Services were held in San Antonio on January 19, 2013. Suzy's life will be celebrated again at a private service in April, the month of her birth, in Oklahoma City. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations to her favorite charity: Holmes Business Career Faculty Scholarship, c/o Mary Osborne, 6500 Ingram Rd, San Antonio, TX 78251. Checks should be made payable to "Holmes High School" and include a note indicating the donation is in memory of Suzy Payne.
