Obituary Condolences

December 2, 1926 - January 27, 2013 OKLAHOMA CITY Gerald McWhirter passed away peacefully January 27, 2013 with his loving family by his side. Gerald was a man of faith and high integrity who dearly loved and cared for the Lord, his family and a host of friends. Gerald was a well-respected man in the community and his church. Gerald married his high school sweetheart and first love, Sally. They grew up in Sentinel, OK, residing in Oklahoma City for the majority of their lives. They were blessed with 65 years of marriage before Sally's passing in 2010, and two lovely daughters and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gerald enlisted in the United States Army after his graduation and marriage, serving our country in WWII, stationed in the Pacific and Japan during his tour of duty. Gerald worked for The Daily Oklahoman after returning home from his military service. Thereafter, Gerald owned and operated, along with his wife, J&M Roofing Co. The family owned business is still in existence after 55 years at the same location, 1800 Linwood, OKC. Gerald was a member of the Shrine for over fifty years. He was also an integral part and a contributor for the Lions Club in OKC, OK, raising funds to help build the present Lions Hall building. Gerald's second love was square dancing, caring and loving his square dance family to the very end of his life. Gerald and Sally took square dance lessons in 1947, learning to become a square dance caller shortly thereafter. He began his square dancing career in 1948 and, in 1949, Gerald organized and began calling regularly for Silver Spur Square Dance Club of Oklahoma City and proudly remained their one and only Club caller and instructor for nearly 64 years, a record of which was submitted to the Guinness World Book of Records. Gerald also called for numerous other clubs and special events on all levels of square dancing, both within and outside the city and state, being nationally renowned throughout the country. He devoted his calling and teaching abilities to Silver Spur, OKC, Advancers and Magic Squares Square Dance Clubs. Gerald was also an avid golfer and sports enthusiast, being a fan of OU sports and the Oklahoma City Thunder basketball team. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and his precious wife, Sally. Gerald is survived by his two daughters, Ginger Ann Slover and husband Chuck of OKC, OK and Kathy Sue Newsom and husband Phil of Choctaw, OK, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gerald and his wife, Sally, were longtime members of Tulakes Baptist Church in OKC, OK. The family requests that memorials be made to Tulakes Baptist Church, OKC or to a . Gerald will be truly missed by all of his family and friends but leaves us a legacy of the importance of caring and loving one another which will remain in our hearts forever. Viewing will be Thursday, 9am-9pm, with the family present from 6-8pm at Mercer-Adams. Services will be at 2:00pm, Saturday, February 2, 2013, at Putnam City Baptist Church with interment in Rose Hill Burial Park.
