Oct 8, 1934 - April 2, 2013 BURNEYVILLE Morris Eugene Andruss Jr died at his home on April 2. Gene, as he was commonly called, was born in Enid, OK on Oct. 8, 1934, to Morris Eugene and Grace Cantrell Andruss. Gene grew up in Enid and graduated from Enid High School in 1952, where he was a member of the State Championship basketball team. He attended Phillips University on a basketball scholarship. He received his Master's Degree in Education from Northwestern University in Alva, OK. He started coaching and teaching in Fairview, OK in 1959 and retired in 1990 as an administrator for the Putnam City Schools in OKC. He taught and coached in those 31 years at Cherokee, Pryor, Claremore Jr. College and Oklahoma City University and was privileged to have coached several all-state athletes and was named the 1977 All-State Basketball Coach. In 1960, Gene joined the Oklahoma National Guard and retired as a SMG (E-9) after 34 and a half years. He enjoyed several interesting assignments during his military service, including Honduras and the Pentagon. In 1953, Gene married Mary Martha Byrd in Enid, OK. They had one son, Tim, who lives with his wife Carla in Oklahoma City and is a PGA golf professional. Gene was also a sports official for several years and upon retirement, became the oldest electrician's apprentice in the state. His hobby was golf. He played in many retired military golf tournaments throughout the U.S. and had headed for five years a tournament at Falconhead and Winstar golf courses for retirees and friends. Gene was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Marilyn Agee. He is survived by his wife of 60 years; his son and daughter-in-law, of OKC; a sister, Nancy Washington (Bill), of Pace, FL; and a brother, Mike (Susie), of Yukon, OK. He is also survived by several beloved nieces and nephews. Burial will be in Fort Sill National Cemetery at a later date.
