Obituary Condolences

Dale E. Hamilton was born in Mena, Arkansas on March 4, 1909 to William and Dosha Hamilton. He died on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002 in Edmond. After graduating from Bristow High School, Dale entered Central State Teachers' College in Edmond (now UCO) in 1928. Upon graduation in 1933, Dale had earned an unparalleled twelve varsity letters, excelling in football, basketball, and track. After coaching stints at Ponca City, Bristow, and Cushing, he returned to Central initially as Head Basketball Coach and later as Head Football Coach and Athletic Director. At various times during his 44-year tenure with the University, he also coached track, tennis, and golf. Coach Hamilton received many awards and honors during his illustrious career. Among them were induction into the NAIA Hall of Fame and the UCO Athletic Hall of Fame. Dale was especially pleased that both he and his son, Robert, were named 'Distinguished Former Students' of UCO. In 1993, the University officially named their athletic arena, 'Hamilton Field House' in his honor. Dale served on active duty with the US Navy during World War II and with the Army 45th Infantry division during the Korean Conflict. He was a long-time, loyal member of the First Christian Church and the Edmond Kiwanis Club. Dale is survived by sister Helen Smith of Bartlesville, daughters Joan Reed of Norman, Mary Dale Bitterfield and husband Zane of Foxboro MA, and daughter-in-law Jan Hamilton of Edmond. Also surviving are grandchildren Larry Dale and Lisa Harvey-Reed of Norman, Julie Reed and husband George Shangrow of Seattle, Lisa Reed and husband John Orr of Portland OR; Leslie and Greg DuPertuis of McLean VA, Robert V. and Yukari Hamilton of Alexandria VA, Leigh and Bob Clancy of Michigan City, IN, Mike and Shannon Hamilton of Pleasanton CA; William and Melanie Potter of Indianapolis, IN, and Katy and Matt Davis of TN. Great-grandchildren are Jennifer, Kristen, Sara and Hayley Reed; David Zachary and Luke Hamilton Wheeler, and Daisy Shangrow; Clarke and Jacob Orr; Jason, Lindsay, and Matthew DuPertuis; Robby and Mark Edwin Hamilton; Katie and Jack Hamilton Clancy; Layne, Halle, and Molly Hamilton. Preceding Dale in death were his parents, his wife Babe Hamilton, sons Billy Dale and Robert E. Hamilton, sister Lulabelle Adams, grandson David Reed, great granddaughter Michelle Kana Hamilton. Services are scheduled for 2 PM on Friday, Sept. 6, 2002 at First Christian Church of Edmond. Visitation is at Baggerley Funeral Home through Friday morning.
