October 25, 1927 - November 27, 2017 OKLAHOMA CITY Eletha McCollum, 90, Oklahoma City, passed away on November 27, 2017 after a brief battle with cancer at the Bellevue Health Center under the care of Mercy Hospice. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Leroy McCollum in 1989, a daughter, Marcia Jo in 1950, her sister, Juanita (Dawson) Wilson, and three brothers, Ben Dawson, William Dawson and Robert Dawson.She was born Eletha Nadine Dawson to William J. Dawson and Dora P. (Oliver) Dawson in Blackwell, Okla. on Oct. 25, 1927. Her father died when she was three and she was raised with her siblings in Caney, Kan. by her loving mother during The Great Depression and The Dust Bowl. She graduated with honors in 1945 from Caney High School in Kansas and attended the University of Kansas before meeting the love of her life, O.L. "Mac" McCollum following the end of WWII. Eletha and "Mac" were married in Hiawatha, Kan. in the Spring of 1946, and settled in Shidler, Okla., where "Mac" began his 35 years of service with the Phillips Petroleum Company.In Shidler, Eletha was engaged in community activities including the Shidler Schools PTA, Women's Federated Club and the Order of Eastern Star where she served a term as Worthy Matron. She was a member of the First Methodist Church in Shidler, taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for several years and was an adult sponsor for the Methodist Youth Fellowship (MYF). She also served as a substitute teacher at Shidler High School. As her children matured, she worked at various times in Shidler for McCollum's Office Service, OTASCO, Pumping Unit Supply Co. and S&S Music Co. Eletha was very involved in her children's activities, serving as a Cub Scout Den Mother and encouraging her children in activities including Scouting, 4-H Club, sports, science fairs, music and creative arts.In 1977, "Mac" was transferred by Phillips to Oklahoma City where they purchased their home at 3123 Wilshire Terrace. Eletha attended nursing training and was licensed as an LPN. She worked several years as a nurse at Deaconess Hospital in OKC until her retirement in 1992.Survivors include four children and their spouses: David and Jaki (Ballew) McCollum of Las Cruces, N.M., Randy and Mary K. (Taylor) McCollum of Artesia, N.M., Janet (McCollum) and Gail Fowler of Pawhuska, Okla., and Tim and Katrena (Hale) McCollum of Morgan Hill, Calif. Additional survivors include 14 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and two nieces, Billie Jean (Dawson) Lambert, Hattiesburg, Miss., and Sue (Wilson) Falcone of Greensboro, N.C.Funeral Services are arranged through Hahn-Cook/Street & Draper. Viewing will be permitted 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, November 30, 2017 and 8:00 am to 9:00 am, December 1, 2017.
