Helen TeAta Gale Cole, 81, of Moore, OK, was born on July 13, 1922 and passed away on April 7, 2004. Helen was married to John D. Cole, Sr. on February 9, 1946 in Ardmore, Oklahoma. Helen and John were married for 54 years. Helen was a member of McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church. Helen was an enrolled member of the Chickasaw Nation. In 1999, she was inducted into the Chickasaw Hall of Fame. Helen's priorities were always her faith and family. However, her passions were politics, good government, and the creation of a two-party system of government in Oklahoma. Helen served in the Oklahoma Senate, District 45, from November 1984 to November 1988 and from July 1991 to November 1996. Helen also served as Mayor of Moore, from May 1990 to June 1991. She was selected to be a member of the Oklahoma Delegation to the Republican National Conventional on three occasions - 1968, 1992, and 2000. Helen is survived by her two sons, John D. Cole, Jr. (Christal) of Norman, and Thomas J. Cole (Ellen) of Moore; three grandchildren, Amy Cole Guisinger (Keith) and Mason Cole of Moore, and Christi Henthorn of OKC; three great grandchildren, Charlie Cole, Ashley TeAta Guisinger, and Cody Guisinger, all of Moore; aunt, Lahoma Barton of Ada; sister in law, Maxine Gale of Dallas, TX; sister in law, Mary McMeans of San Angelo, TX; brother in law, Donald H. Cole of OKC; 4 cousins, Linda Harris (Ralph) of OKC, Taloah Thorpe (Bill) of Castle Rock, CO, Gene Thompson (Vicky) of Austin, TX, Betty Andrews (Harold) of Duncan; and six nieces and nephews, Arthur Gale of Dallas, TX, Joe McMeans of San Angelo, TX, Lt. Col. Chris McMeans of Moore, Mary Alice McCollum of Edmond, Vicky McNally of OKC, and Kyle Cole of OKC. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, E.E. Fiefield; husband, John D. Cole, Sr.; brother, Thomas Gale; aunt and mentor, TeAta Fisher; sister in law, Nelda Cox, her husband Houston, and their son Robert Cox (Ardmore); brother in law Fred T. McMeans (Marrietta); and most recently her very special cousin Hiawatha Estes (Northridge, CA). Memorial services will be 11:00 AM, Monday, April 12, 2004 at McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church, located at 419 South University Blvd. in Norman, Oklahoma. Services are under the direction of the John M. Ireland Funeral Home & Chapel. The family asks that memorial contributions be made to the USAO Foundation, noting the TeAta Scholarship Fund in honor of Helen's dear aunt.
