1949 - 2019

Owen Phillip Cotter
Nov. 2, 1949 - Jan. 28, 2019

Phil passed away peacefully, with courage and grace, surrounded by family and friends. He often reminisced about his idyllic childhood in the Cleveland neighborhood. The early death of his father, Everett, altered the trajectory of his family's life. His mother JoAnn moved forward, modeling for him and his sisters Brooke and Leslie, important lessons in fortitude in the face of adversity.
A gifted athlete, he was captain of the champion Northwest Classen swim team. He became a sought after softball player, earning his chops at short field for the Cornish Furniture Game Hens. He taught history and coached in OKC for 25 years. Every summer for 18 years he coached the Greens swim club (perennial city champs). Phil delighted in connecting with former students and swimmers and their folks.
A "simple twist of fate" in 1981 limited his mobility but not his intellect and wit as he became an astute observer of the human condition. He accepted his fate and for 38 years served as inspiration for others; he epitomized RESILIANCE.
He wanted to sign off with some Buffett; "some of it's magic, some of it's tragic, But I've had a good life all the way". In lieu of a service it is suggested we each perform a RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS in his honor. Our buddy would like that.
