Vernon served in the army during the Korean War. He was stationed for two years at Fort Hood, TX. He married Dorothy Maurine Schwartz on Dec. 30, 1951. He built his family home and lived two miles from where he was born all his life. He retired in 1985 from Tinker Air Force Base as an electrical engineer. Vernon was an inventor at heart. He loved to take ordinary things and make them better. He was his happiest with Maurine by his side, traveling to south Texas to visit family and friends for the winters. He is survived by one sister, Nadine Capps; his two daughters, Sharon & Danny Keener, of Choctaw; and Teresa & David Shupe, of Oklahoma City; four grandchildren, Kyle & Kristi Keener, Kayla & Ryan Smoot, Cassi & Adam Rosko, and Adam & Casey Shupe; seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2017, at Barnes Friederich Funeral Home Chapel with interment following at the Schwartz Cemetery, S.E. 89th & Anderson Rd. The family would like to give special thanks to Helen Bacon Sailsbury, Visiting Angels and its workers and Wellington Parke for their care and love of our father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
