John Davis Obituary
Renowned architect John Marsh Davis and creator of such San Francisco Bay Area landmarks as Chateau Souverain, Joseph Phelps Winery, Rutherford Hill Winery, and numerous awe-striking homes in Marin County, California, passed away on February 22, 2009, leaving the world a more beautiful place with his gifted talent. With countless awards and over three-quarters of a century of celebrated excellence, John Marsh Davis filled his buildings with wit and unequalled originality. He possessed "a unique quality", making him stand out from others. Every home he built was one of a kind and irreplaceable, and all those for whom he built homes had a special relationship with him friendships for life. John Marsh Davis' work broke rules which seemed to defy gravity with its extravagance. John Marsh loved to call it "Forgotten Modern". We won't forget because this architecture will live on in the works of John Marsh Davis, Frank Lloyd Wright, Bruce Goff and Herbe Greene. John Marsh Davis was born in the heartland of Oklahoma on October 12, 1931, grew up in Altus and attended the University of Oklahoma. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1955, and after spending four years as a Naval Officer travelling the world, he settled in Sausalito on San Francisco Bay in 1961. In his later years, John Marsh's unparalleled love for landscape architecture became his focus. He was known for toiling all day in a garden, creating unimaginable landscapes that enhanced what nature had already created. By his side were his faithful Golden Retrievers. He could be seen with his beloved niece, Katy, her husband Hoshin and their daughter Jane, hiking the hills of Marin and enjoying the view. We will all enjoy the view that you left us, John! John was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. John is survived by his sister, Barbara Davis Moore of Amelia Island, Florida his niece, Kathryn Davis Moore-Song of Mill Valley, California nephew, Richard W. Moore III of Amelia Island, Florida uncle, John J. Banker of Tulsa, Oklahoma as well as many other beloved friends, cousins and relatives. The family requests that any donations made go the ASPCA in John Marsh Davis' name.
