Pete Darcey III Obituary
Henry J. (Pete) Darcey, III was born March 3, 1930, in Oklahoma City, OK, and died peacefully at home on August 31, 2009 surrounded by family after a courageous and willful battle against a relentless cancer. Pete will be remembered by the love of his life, his adored wife Pat of 53 years, their 8 children Deanne, Hank, Dan, Mallory, Carrie, Mike, Maggie, Chris, 13 cherished grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and two sisters Betty Tyrrell and Jeanne Osgood. Pete always measured success by his family, friends and a deep Catholic faith. He considered himself a wealthy man indeed. A humble man, he inspired those around him with his ornery sense of humor and his genuine love for others. Knowing him was a privilege; being family to him a gift. He graduated in 1948 from Classen High School and went on to Oklahoma A&M, better known as Oklahoma State University, where he was honored to have played basketball for Mr. Henry Iba. Immediately following graduation, he joined the Milwaukee Hawks NBA team where he played for a year. Following the NBA he enjoyed a world tour with the Harlem Globetrotters as a player on the opposing team, the Boston Whirlwinds. Pete met Pat on a blind date. He found his niche and many friends in the life insurance business where he was able to give security to many peoples' lives. This choice of career enabled him to be home when his kids got off the bus after school and be fully involved in every aspect of their lives. Pete had passion for life! He was an avid OSU fan, loved horseback riding, spending time at the family's cabin in the Colorado Rockies and enjoying the simple things in life. A glass of wine on the porch swing at sunset with his bride was a nightly jewel in his crown. He will be remembered with a Wake and Rosary Service Thursday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Sept. 4, at 11 a.m., at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 9th & Boulevard in Edmond. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Burial Park. Pete's pallbearers will be: Marvin Bennett Sr., Marvin Bennet Jr., Mike Cooke, Jim Hamilton, Francis Hunt, Jordan Levy, Paul McNutt and Gene Parsons.
